E-Ink screens use physical pigment micro-capsules typically limited to 16 levels of grayscale. When reading PDFs with parchment textures, faux-leather backgrounds, aged paper tint, or decorative watermarks, the E-Ink controller is forced to simulate those shades with heavy halftone dithering. This causes muddy gray grain, distracting ghosting, frequent screen flashing, and washed-out text. Whitening the background to pure #FFFFFF allows the E-Ink display to render crisp, deep-black text without dithering noise, drastically reducing eye strain and battery consumption.

Scanned Book uses an aggressive threshold (185) to eliminate yellowed paper aging, scanner bed shadows, and ink bleed-through from reverse pages. You can also select Custom to fine-tune the exact cutoff threshold between 140 and 240.
